March 21, 2006 Monthly Meeting

This meeting was held at 6:00 PM in Suite 420 at Cummins Station.

The President began the meeting with the following chapter business and announcements.

  1. Rita Johnson was recently recognized with a Distinguished Chapter Service Award (DCSA). Congratulations to Rita on this much-deserved award! The complete story about her award is available in the March newsletter.
  2. It’s time to begin planning for next year’s officers. To help new officers, we are currently creating a Chapter Handbook, which contains information useful to each of the incoming officers. I still need input from the secretary, publicity officer, webmaster, membership, and employment director for this book.
  3. If anyone wants a copy of the Dan Beall handout and/or Doc-2-Help trial CD, contact Amy Oldham. Dan presented a Doc-2-Help session in February.
  4. Don’t forget to vote in the STC election. Vote online at (www.stc.org) and click on the "Vote Now" button. Voting ends noon EST 3/31/06.
  5. Mark your calendars for the following upcoming STC events:
    • Atlanta Chapter's annual conference, Currents, on March 24 and 25.
    • April in Auburn on April 8th hosted by the Birmingham STC.
    • Annual Awards Banquet on April 11th at Amerigo’s Restaurant
    • STC’s 53rd Annual Conference in Las Vegas, NV May 7 – 10.
    • Combined STC/ASTD meeting on May 16th at HCA at 5:30 PM

After the chapter business, the President introduced the featured speaker. Mark E. Wallis is a Senior Information Developer for Global Management Technologies, an Atlanta-based leader in workforce management and cash management software. Mark has been developing online and print-based user assistance for over 20 years. He has a BA in Technical Journalism and Computer Science from Colorado State University. An active judge in regional and international online communications competitions, he has received numerous awards for his user guides, quick references, online help, HTML-based help, and marketing materials. Mark is an avid photographer who made the transition to digital cameras over four years ago.

Mark presented and demonstrated a session entitled “Choosing and using a digital camera”. During the presentation, Mark explored the various uses for digital cameras at home and at work; explained pixels, mega pixels, and photo file types in detail; and he provided a list of features and purchase criteria that each of us could use to determine the camera that is most appropriate for the situation in which it’s being used. Mark included numerous examples of digital photos—both electronic and printed—and he demonstrated the zoom feature in real-time.

After Mark’s presentation, we ended with a question and answer period followed by a prize drawing. Beth Tanner served as the prize drawing emcee, as she had brought a gift from the South Carolina Foothills chapter.
